When I signed up for a group trip to South Africa, I thought I knew what I was in for. Stunning views, a few adrenaline activities, good vibes and some beach time. But what I didn’t expect? That I’d leave feeling completely changed – in the best way.
Here are the most unexpected (and unforgettable) moments from my Plotpackers adventure across South Africa.
1. I Didn’t Expect to Feel So Close to Strangers So Quickly
I was genuinely surprised at how easily everyone got along. We were all completely different – different countries, different backgrounds – but united by the same desire to experience something new. That shared purpose made our bond feel extra strong from the start.
I made friends for life on this trip. People I would have never crossed paths with otherwise, but who instantly felt like family. Some of my favourite memories are from the most unassuming moments – the funny nights in hostels that felt like a giant sleepover, or the long bus journeys where laughter never stopped.
Our final evening stands out the most. We were on a sunset cruise, music playing in the background, watching the sky turn gold while we looked back on the entire trip. That night, it really hit me how much we’d shared – and how close we’d all become.

2. I Didn’t Expect the Landscape to Be That Diverse
Cape Town absolutely blew me away. It’s one of those rare cities that gives you everything – a buzzing city centre, dramatic mountains, and golden beaches all rolled into one. Whether you’re hiking up Table Mountain or wandering the V&A Waterfront, it constantly hits you how naturally beautiful it is.
But it wasn’t just Cape Town that got me. Hermanus, a quieter coastal town, completely surprised me. One morning, a couple of us went for a run along the cliffs while keeping our eyes peeled for whales in the bay. It was peaceful, wild, and full of character – the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave.
3. I Didn’t Expect to Jump Off a Bridge Twice
I was always planning on doing the bungee. I love a bit of adventure but standing on the edge of the Bloukrans Bridge, I definitely questioned my decision.
But with everyone hyping each other up and the atmosphere feeling electric, I went for it. It was over in seconds, but the build-up and the feeling afterwards stuck with me. I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did – so much so that I ended up doing it twice.
It wasn’t about chasing adrenaline. It just felt good to prove to myself that I could do something that scared me.

4. I Didn’t Expect the Small Moments to Stick With Me
When I think back on the trip, it’s not just the big-ticket activities that come to mind – it’s the small, quiet moments that really stayed with me.
Things like having a coffee with someone I’d only just met but somehow felt like I’d known for ages. Watching the landscape change out the bus window during long drives. Or sitting on a beach with no real plan, just chatting and watching the sun dip below the horizon.
Those little moments didn’t make it onto the itinerary, but they made the trip feel real. They reminded me to slow down and enjoy where I was, without needing it to be a big ‘moment’.
5. I Didn’t Expect to Learn So Much About the Country
Stellenbosch and the township visit were real eye-openers for me. I’d read a bit about South Africa’s social contrasts before the trip, but seeing them in real life was something else entirely.
There’s a huge difference in wealth and opportunity across the country, and it made me reflect on my own privilege. What stood out most wasn’t the hardship – it was the kindness, the gratitude, and the spirit of the people we met.
Some members of our group actually went back to the township on our free day and donated extra supplies. A few even contributed towards school tuition. That moment reminded me how small acts can mean a lot – and taught me to appreciate everything I have, even the little things.

6. I Didn’t Expect the Wildlife to Feel So Personal
Seeing animals in the wild is one of the main reasons people come to South Africa – and I was excited for it too – but I didn’t expect how personal those moments would feel.
On our safari, there was a kind of quiet intensity in the air. Everyone in the truck was scanning the bush, trying to spot the Big 5, whispering guesses and sharing binoculars. We didn’t see every animal on the list, but the experience didn’t feel lacking at all. It was peaceful, exciting, and made me appreciate how unpredictable nature really is.
One of the standout moments for me was walking near a group of rescued elephants. You hear how big they are, but until you’re standing close enough to hear them breathe, you don’t fully understand it. There was something calm and grounding about it – a reminder of how lucky we were to be in their space, not the other way around.
7. I Didn’t Expect to Fall in Love with Penguins
If you’d told me before the trip that I’d become totally obsessed with penguins, I probably would’ve laughed. But Boulders Beach changed that.
There’s something surreal about walking along a sun-soaked boardwalk and seeing penguins just chilling in the sand like little locals. I must have taken 200 photos. They’re adorable, curious, and somehow perfectly matched to the wild energy of South Africa itself.

8. I Didn’t Expect to Come Home Different
The biggest plot twist of all? How much this trip shifted something in me.
I came back more confident, more open, and with a deeper sense of gratitude for the world around me. It gave me a fresh perspective – not just on travel, but on how I connect with people, take risks, and live in the moment.
I’ve already booked my next adventure. Once you’ve experienced a trip like this, it’s kind of impossible not to.
This trip was full of what I expected – beautiful views, unforgettable experiences, and adrenaline highs. But the real magic? That lived in everything I didn’t expect. The people. The quiet moments. The lessons. The laughter.
If you’re thinking about doing the South Africa Experience with Plotpackers, my advice is simple: do it. Just don’t expect it to go to plan. Expect it to go way beyond it.
