Frequently Asked Questions

The currency is the Thai Baht (THB). It’s advisable to carry some cash for small purchases, but credit cards are widely accepted in urban areas and tourist spots.
Yes, Thailand is generally safe for tourists. However, it’s wise to exercise common sense, such as safeguarding belongings, avoiding poorly lit areas at night, and being cautious with street food if you have a sensitive stomach.
Thai cuisine is renowned for its bold flavours, incorporating sweet, sour, salty, and spicy elements. Must-try dishes include Pad Thai, Tom Yum Goong (spicy shrimp soup), Som Tum (papaya salad), and Massaman curry. Street food is a highlight and generally safe if you choose busy stalls.
Essentials include lightweight clothing, swimwear, comfortable walking shoes, a reusable water bottle, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a power adapter (Type A, B, C, or O).
The official language is Thai, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Basic phrases in Thai can enhance your experience, and using translation apps can help bridge any language gaps.

It’s recommended to drink bottled water, use mosquito repellent, and consider vaccinations for common diseases (consult your doctor). Travel insurance is also compulsory for all Plotpackers travellers!

While casual clothing is acceptable in most areas, it’s important to dress modestly when visiting temples and religious sites. Wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and remove shoes before entering temple grounds.
Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Many travellers can enter Thailand visa-free for stays of up to 30 days if arriving by air (or 15 days by land). Check the Thai embassy website or consult your local embassy for specific requirements based on your nationality.
Yes, credit cards are widely accepted in urban areas and tourist hotspots, especially in hotels, restaurants, and shops. Visa and MasterCard are the most commonly accepted. However, small businesses and markets may prefer cash.
While Thailand is generally safe for tourists, it’s wise to carry only what you need and keep cash and valuables secure. Use a money belt or keep cash in a secure place to minimise risk.

Travel With Purpose

We know you’re here to travel the world, have once in a lifetime experiences, and meet lifelong friends, but we also think it’s important to know about the kind of company you’ll be supporting and travelling with.

We’re investing heavily into brand new, patented technologies that make the world a safer place for women through their smartphones and watches. This technology accurately detects, quietly alerts emergency services, and records a complete evidence pack in order to increase offender conviction rates in the event a user is attacked. You can read more about this (as well as how to get involved, if you’d like to!) here.

We believe that carbon neutral is the bare minimum. Beyond accurately calculating and offsetting our travel operations, we’re heavily involved in climate action. As a certified partner of the United Nations in Sustainable Tourism, we’re working to have the lowest emission tours on the market, we’re making our way into UK climate politics, and you can read more about our climate action programme and goals here.

We’re a small, female founded business with a powerhouse team. We care about fostering friendships for life, making the trips of a lifetime more affordable, working with the most incredible local communities all over the world to make this possible, having the best guides to ensure a safe, exciting experience, and putting purpose over profit. That’s why we spent pretty much all of our first year profits on making tangible progress on our purpose, as you’ve read above. We’re just getting started, and we’re hope you’re as excited as we are to join us on this journey! You can read more about us here.
